How much does a gas boiler cost to install?

If you’re thinking about replacing an old boiler, one of the first questions you’re likely to ask is: how much does a new gas boiler cost to install?

As a general guide, a new gas boiler installation in the UK can cost approximately £2,500 to £5,500, depending on the boiler, your existing heating system and the complexity of the work involved.

For a straightforward, like-for-like replacement using a good-quality boiler and including sensible system upgrades, you could typically expect to pay around £3,000–£3,500.

However, boiler installation isn’t simply about taking one appliance off the wall and replacing it with another.

The condition of your heating system, system cleaning, controls, pipework, boiler location and the work required to protect your new boiler can all affect the final price.

At E&W Plumbing and Heating, we believe these factors should be considered when comparing boiler installation quotations.

Average Gas Boiler Installation Costs

Combi Boiler

£2,500-£3,500

Small/Medium Homes

System Boiler

£2,750-£3,500

Higher hot water demand

Conventional Boiler

£2,500-£3,250

Traditional Systems

Complex Installations can exceed £5,500

The price of a boiler installation varies greatly depending on the make and model of the appliance and which part of the UK you live in.

Swapping a boiler like for like can often be done in a day, but it is unlikely that the system will have been cleaned effectively if it is done this quickly.

It’s also likely that sensible system upgrades will have been overlooked, which could reduce the risk of failure in future.

When changing a boiler we typically spend a day or more cleaning older systems and so the cost to do the job right and to a high standard will always be more than the cost of simply taking a boiler off the wall and putting a new one on.

All boilers will come with manufacturers guarantee/warranty, but they will all exclude certain things, for example installation defects or sludge related failures.

Sludge is the most common cause of appliance failure and that’s why it is so important that the system is cleaned properly when a new boiler is fitted.

Benefits of LPG Boilers

Different boiler types & typical replacement costs

Combi Boiler

Combi boilers are the most popular choice for UK homes because they provide heating and hot water directly from the mains without requiring a separate hot water cylinder.

Typical installation cost: £2,500 – £3,500

These are ideal for small to medium-sized homes, properties with limited storage space and households with moderate hot water demand

System Boiler Installation

System boilers work with a hot water cylinder and are suitable for homes with higher hot water requirements.

Typical installation cost: £2750 – £3500

These are good for larger households, homes with multiple bathrooms and families that use large amounts of hot water

Conventional (Regular) Boiler Installation

Also known as traditional or heat-only boilers, these systems require both a hot water cylinder and often a cold-water storage tank.

Typical installation cost: £2,500 – £3250

Ideal for older properties, homes with existing conventional heating systems, and properties with high hot water demand.

The prices above will generally include a high-quality boiler unit (Worcester or Vaillant), removal of the old boiler, a power flush or full system flush (depending on the age and design of your system), system testing and balancing, appliance commissioning and registration with Building Control and registration of an extended manufacturers guarantee (usually 10 years+).

Different boilers, different costs

  • Premium manufacturers generally charge more for their boilers, but they often offer longer warranties and enhanced reliability. The cost difference between an entry-level and premium boiler can be several hundred pounds or more.
  • Boilers are available in various output ratings measured in kilowatts (kW). Larger homes typically require higher-output boilers, which can increase equipment costs. Choosing the correct size is essential to ensure efficient operation and avoid unnecessary energy usage.
  • Replacing a boiler in the same location is usually the most affordable option. If you want the new boiler moved to a different room, such as from the kitchen to a utility room or loft, additional pipework and labour costs can significantly increase the installation price.

Heating System Upgrades

When fitting a new boiler, there are recommendations that we may give including power flushing the heating system, installing a magnetic filter. This could also include upgrading controls and thermostats, replacing old pipework and adding thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs)
